Bio

Sona is a classical pianist and clarinetist from Colorado. She is a class of 2027 student at Peak to Peak Charter School.

Sona has been a member of the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras (GBYO) since freshman year. She has performed on clarinet and piano, including roles as first chair, in GBYO’s top ensemble (Symphony) led by Gary Lewis. Prior to GBYO, Sona played both instruments for the Longmont Youth Symphony Orchestra, led by Keynes Chen. In addition to the full orchestra, she has participated in chamber ensembles for both organizations.

Sona has been studying piano via the Suzuki Method since she was five years old. She has completed six of the seven Suzuki Piano volumes and plans to complete the final book before graduating high school. Her piano repertoire includes several advanced pieces, such as “Andaluza” from Danzas Españolas by Granados, “Notturno” by Grieg, “O Polichinelo” by Villa-Lobos, and “Sonata No. 11 in A Major” by Mozart, which has three movements, including the famous “Rondo alla Turca.” She has participated in University of Colorado’s highly-selective piano intensive summer camp for two years and has had the opportunity to work with and learn from notable musicians, including Dr. David Korevaar, Dr. Andrew Cooperstock, Dr. Robert Hjelmstad, and Dr. Alejandro Cremaschi.

Sona has been selected as a clarinetist for each of Colorado’s four major statewide music honor groups (All-State Concert Band, All-State Orchestra, CU Honor Band, and CSU Honor Band) in one or more years. In her sophomore year, she was selected for all four! She is also a member and officer of the Tri-M Music Honor Society at her school. She regularly volunteers at multiple senior living centers and the local hospital, performing on piano as part of her music therapy initiative. She also tutors and mentors young students beginning their musical careers.

Sona currently studies privately with Chris Ruiz on clarinet and Wendy Steinway on piano.
